WooCommerce Subscriptions lets a shop sell products or services with recurring billing. Choosing a payment gateway is a crucial part of that setup: accepting the first payment does not prove that the same integration can collect future payments automatically.
This guide concerns the official WooCommerce Subscriptions extension. Other subscription plugins have their own compatibility rules. Use this guide to shortlist an integration, then check its current documentation against your business location, currency and subscription products before launch.
How WooCommerce Subscriptions works
The extension adds subscription products and manages ongoing subscription records, billing schedules and renewal orders. The subscription describes the continuing agreement; an order records a particular purchase or renewal. Treat them as related records rather than interchangeable names.
For example, a monthly product has an initial checkout and a subscription schedule. Later renewals produce their own order records. Your payment integration handles the collection of money, while the subscription system manages the ongoing relationship. Read the official introduction to WooCommerce Subscriptions for the underlying features.
Before creating a product, decide its billing interval, price, duration, any trial or signup fee, and what the customer receives on each renewal. Also agree how cancellation, failed payments and delivery will be handled. Clear product wording helps avoid a customer confusing a recurring agreement with a one-time purchase.
Automatic renewals versus manual renewals
| Renewal method | Customer experience | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic | Future payments are attempted through the assigned compatible payment method without a new checkout each time. | A gateway integration supporting automatic recurring payments and valid payment authorisation. |
| Manual | The customer pays a renewal order when payment is due. | A working payment route, renewal instructions and follow-up for unpaid orders. |
Manual renewal is a legitimate choice, but it is a different customer journey. Make it clear when customers must return to pay. Automatic renewal still needs monitoring: a payment can fail or require customer action.
The official Subscription Renewal Process guide explains both approaches. Do not assume enabling a new automatic gateway changes existing manual subscriptions; review each subscription’s assigned method and renewal mode before making a change.
Use the official Payment Gateway Guide
Start with the official WooCommerce Subscriptions Payment Gateway Guide. Its automatic-payment list includes Stripe, WooPayments, PayPal Payments, GoCardless, Square, PayPal Braintree, Authorize.net, Mollie and other Marketplace extensions.
The list refers to specific integrations and their current versions, not every plugin carrying the same provider’s name. Gateways outside the Marketplace may also support subscriptions; verify that with their developer.
Check the feature matrix for multiple subscriptions, changing recurring totals or dates, and customer or manager payment-method changes. “Supports subscriptions” does not mean every advanced feature is supported.
Compatible gateway plugins to consider
These are practical starting points, not a universal ranking. Choose around your customers’ payment preferences and the operational features you need.
WooCommerce Stripe Payment Gateway
The WooCommerce Stripe extension is a useful starting point for a shop that wants recurring card payments. It is an integration with Stripe; use the extension’s setup instructions rather than building a separate Stripe Billing subscription for the same customer agreement.
Review the Stripe extension documentation, connect the intended business account and check the payment methods offered for subscription baskets. Test renewal collection as well as checkout, and verify how customers update their payment method. If you already use another Stripe plugin, investigate existing payment tokens and subscriptions before replacing it.
WooPayments
WooPayments is another option to assess for a WooCommerce shop. Review its account eligibility, supported countries and available methods before selecting it. Keep the distinction between the payment plugin and the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension clear: installing a payment plugin does not by itself create your subscription products.
For a new shop, compare the account workflow and day-to-day payment administration with the Stripe extension. Start with an approved recurring method and test the actual product you intend to sell, including any introductory trial.
WooCommerce PayPal Payments
WooCommerce PayPal Payments is worth considering when customers prefer PayPal. Its subscription-specific documentation distinguishes PayPal Subscriptions from PayPal Vaulting with Reference Transactions.
The PayPal Subscriptions route supports recurring billing with more restricted schedule and account-management capabilities. Vaulting requires Reference Transactions approval and supports a more flexible setup. Both require the WooCommerce Subscriptions extension and the appropriate business account.
Check the detailed mode comparison before promising multiple subscriptions in one checkout, switching plans, customer payment-method changes or flexible renewal dates. PayPal’s general compatibility entry should not be read as a guarantee that every mode supports those features.
Configure the relevant subscription and saved-payment settings, then test the selected mode in sandbox. If your account does not have the required permission, resolve that with PayPal rather than assuming a hosting change will enable it.
GoCardless for WooCommerce
The GoCardless extension is a bank-payment option for subscription businesses that want Direct Debit. It supports automatic recurring payments with WooCommerce Subscriptions; verify scheme, country and currency eligibility before choosing it.
Follow the GoCardless documentation to connect the account and configure webhook synchronisation. Test mandate authorisation, collection confirmation and failure in sandbox.
Direct Debit is not an instant card payment. The extension’s subscription order status can change before collection is confirmed, so do not use an active subscription or a Processing order alone as evidence that funds have arrived. Match the provider’s payment state with your fulfilment policy.
What automatic recurring payments require
- The right subscription extension. Install and activate WooCommerce Subscriptions and check compatibility with your current WooCommerce, PHP and checkout setup.
- A compatible gateway integration. Check the exact plugin and enabled method against its current subscription documentation.
- An approved merchant account. Complete provider verification and any recurring-payment permissions. Sandbox approval is not live-account approval.
- A valid recurring payment arrangement. The customer must authorise the appropriate saved payment method, mandate or provider subscription during the supported flow.
- Working callbacks and background processing. Check webhook delivery, scheduled processing, HTTPS and server errors. A checkout confirmation alone does not validate renewals.
- A tested recovery process. Decide how to notify customers, update payment methods and reconcile failed or delayed collections.
WooCommerce’s guide to enabling gateways for subscriptions explains gateway availability. If no method appears for a subscription basket, inspect compatibility and configuration before changing the product to conceal the problem.
Practical setup workflow
- Back up your shop and prepare a staging environment with test payments and controlled emails. See our backup restoration guide.
- Install the Subscriptions extension and chosen gateway through legitimate sources. Follow our payment gateway installation guide for PayPal, Stripe and GoCardless connection steps.
- Create a test subscription product. Enter the intended price and billing interval, and review any trial, signup fee, shipping and duration.
- Check that checkout shows a compatible method and clearly explains the recurring agreement.
- Buy the test subscription through the supported sandbox flow. Inspect the initial order and subscription separately.
- Verify the subscription’s renewal mode and assigned payment method. Confirm the expected next payment date.
- Test a renewal, failure and customer payment-method update before connecting live accounts.
Use the official Store Manager Guide when configuring product and subscription options. Choose the simplest product that meets the business need, then add more complicated schedules only after testing them.
Saved methods, renewals and migration
A saved payment method is not just a card number typed into an order note. Compatible integrations use provider-managed references or authorisations. WooCommerce’s Manage Payment Methods guide explains how subscription-linked methods work.
Where supported, customers can change the method assigned to a subscription. Check that the change applies to the intended subscriptions and future renewals. Deleting a saved method and assigning a replacement are different actions; test the customer account experience before writing instructions.
Changing gateway plugins or merchant accounts is a migration project. Existing references may belong to the original provider account or integration and may not transfer automatically. Record which subscriptions use the old gateway, keep a rollback plan and consult the relevant integration’s migration documentation. Never assume activating a new plugin will repair or replace every existing recurring agreement.
Test renewal payments properly
Use a staging shop and the gateway’s test mode. Buy a test subscription, record its ID, and follow the official renewal testing instructions.
For an eligible active test subscription, the documented Process renewal action can exercise a renewal. Availability depends on payment-date support, and gateways that schedule collections themselves behave differently. This action can charge the assigned method: never experiment on a live customer’s subscription.
Verify the renewal order, provider transaction, subscription notes and next scheduled payment. Include failed collection, cancellation and any trial-to-paid transition in the test plan. Confirm that customer emails and fulfilment match the intended outcome.
| Scenario | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Initial signup | Was the intended recurring method assigned to the correct subscription? |
| Automatic renewal | Did a payment occur without the customer completing another checkout? |
| Failed collection | Are the payment state, customer message and service access appropriate? |
| Payment-method change | Will the next renewal use the intended replacement? |
| Cancellation | Does your access or delivery process follow the agreed cancellation policy? |
| Trial or changed schedule | Does the specific gateway mode support and correctly process the planned transition? |
Hosting and troubleshooting
A subscription shop needs dependable processing between customer visits. Monitor scheduled actions, webhook delivery and relevant logs. For an overdue renewal, separate “the job never started” from “the provider rejected the payment” and “the payment succeeded but the shop missed its update”. Each points to a different investigation.
Match one affected subscription with its renewal order and provider reference before retrying anything. Confirm whether money was collected to avoid duplicate charges. Diagnose plugin conflicts on staging rather than disabling several live checkout components at once.
Keep checkout and callbacks clear of inappropriate caching or bot challenges. A VPS may suit a demanding store, but additional resources will not grant provider permissions or make an incompatible payment method support renewals.
Get help choosing your subscription setup
For a new shop, shortlist a recurring card option such as Stripe or WooPayments, assess PayPal if your customers want it, and consider GoCardless when Direct Debit fits the collection and fulfilment model. These are our practical suggestions; the final choice depends on the features and account approvals your shop needs.
We can help assess the technical setup through WooCommerce hosting and management support. Existing customers can open a Technical Support ticket with the gateway plugin/version, subscription and renewal order IDs, environment, error message and recent changes. Never include passwords, secret keys or customer payment details.
For merchant approval, payout restrictions or missing recurring permissions, contact the payment provider. For help planning the website and its subscription flow, talk to Ginger.
